914 Church Street - The 1851 Nunan Map of Honesdale shows this property as the home of Ebenezer Kingsbury. He was an attorney, a state senator, and for a time, the Speaker of the Senate. Senator Kingsbury died at age forty in 1844, leaving a wife and five children. Elizabeth Kingsbury, his widow, sold the property in 1857 to I.N. Foster who was in the mercantile business with his father Isaac and brother William. In 1896 I.N. Foster willed to his daughter Susan G. Ham "the house and lot on Second Street where I now reside." Rosie Barkley of Damascus was the next owner, buying the house from Susan Ham in 1909 for $5,000. She sold it to Attorney Chester Garratt in 1921. Garratt practiced his profession for forty-five years and was considered Dean of the Wayne County Bar. The house was left to his children and his daughter Elsa, an artist who lived there with her husband, local artist Howard Becker, until 1979. At that time Gary Butcher and Gerald Swendsen purchased the property and did extensive remodeling. ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: ITALIANATE
