528 Academy Street, Hawley The property at 528 Academy Street in Hawley was once part of the extensive land holdings that made up the estate of Joseph Atkinson. The son of one of the earliest settlers in Hawley, Mr. Atkinson served in the Civil War and was the sheriff of Wayne County from 1879 to 1882. Mrs. Eliza Killam purchased the property from the Estate of Joseph Atkinson, and in 1999 current owner Michele Rojas purchased the property and established a charming bed & breakfast. This building is a fine example of the Italianate style, popular in the United States from the 1840's to 1885, with its low-pitched roof, widely overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets, tall narrow windows with elaborate crowns, double front doors, single story bay windows and porches. Original interior details include flooring, elaborate millwork and fireplaces throughout.

From 1993 through 2008 the Honesdale National Bank published an annual wall calendar, each featured 13 historic sites. The sites were chosen and researched by a committee of the historical society and artwork was commissioned to Judy Hunt and William Amptman by the bank.
